What is Homeless Pages?

Homeless Pages is a library of over 1,400 information resources about homelessness and related issues. Homeless Pages is a wide-ranging introduction to the field of homelessness, and has information about reports, books, directories, leaflets, training courses, legislation, computer software and websites - as well as full details of the organisations that provide this information. Homeless Pages includes the most important recent resources available in the field, most of which have been published in the past five years.

Use Homeless Pages as an online library - browse through the data, taking advantage of the unique coding structure to follow links between the resources. When you find a resource you are interested in obtaining, contact the publisher or distributor to order the publication or to book a place on the training course.

Homeless Pages does not include directory style details of hostels, advice services or other agencies providing services for homeless people. If you are homeless or have a housing problem, you can ring Shelter's Free Housing Advice Line on 0808 800 4444 (8am-12midnight, 7 days a week). This is a national freephone helpline for homeless people and those with housing problems and can give details of emergency accommodation, and put you in touch with your nearest housing advice centre. They are often very busy, particularly during the day, but do keep trying.

Each resource (website, directory, leaflet etc) in Homeless Pages is classified in four ways, according to:

Subject
We have divided up the large subject area of homelessness into 18 main subject areas. Each resource is classified into one or more of these wide subject areas.

Keyword
To help you find the resources you need, there are also around 90 keywords defined in the system. Each resource is linked to one or more keywords. Using this classification you can, for example, find all the resources available concerned with dual diagnosis.

Organisation
Each resource is published or provided by an organisation. Homeless Pages has information about over 500 different organisations - publishers, voluntary organisations, local authorities, training providers etc. From their information pages you can find out how to contact them, view their website and see what resources they publish or provide.

Resource
Each resource in Homeless Pages is also classified by what sort of resource it is. There are 15 main types of resources: reports and books, directories, leaflets, websites, etc.

Homeless Pages is published by Resource Information Service.

How to use Homeless Pages

Firstly decide which of the four classifications to use. If you want to see all the available information about a subject area use Subjects, or if you want a more specific search, then use Keywords. To see information about organisations and what they provide, use Organisations. To see information about a particular type of resource, use Resources. Then select one of the four tabs across the top of the screen. This will take you to the relevant index page.

From the index page, you can select a particular subject, keyword, organisation or resource from the list shown on screen. Find and select the one you are interested in. If you want to look at another index page, click the relevant tab at the top of the screen.

You will now see the introduction page for the subject, keyword, organisation or resource. This gives you introductory text, definitions and key contact information. If you want to go back to the index page you initially clicked, just click the highlighted tab.

On the right-hand side of the screen is a box showing how many resources match your selection, along with options of how you wish to sort the selection. Select one of the sort-order options.

You will now see the list of resources that match your selection, sorted in your selected order. Selecting another sort option from the right hand box will re-sort the page.

Now you can click on the title of any particular resource you are interested in to view the page giving details about that resource. If you want to purchase the resource, click on the publisher or distributor name to find contact details. The page also shows you all the classification information for that resource. If you want to see related resources, select one of the links listed to view similar items.

You also have the option of excluding resources that are out of print from your search. Click the button in the box on the right-hand side of the screen labelled 'out of print' to exclude them, and click it once more to include them again. Out of print resources are shown in italics in the list.

Area search

You can find resources on Homeless Pages about homelessness in a particular area, region or country within the UK by using the area search.
