Security of tenure

Security of tenure is the security, or legal rights of occupation, that people have whilst occupying their accommodation. Understanding security of tenure is crucial in housing advice as different forms of tenure determine an occupier's rights to staying in the property, getting repairs done and other important issues. According to the law, the main types of tenure include being an owner occupier (ie Home ownership), a tenant or a licensee. Acts of Parliament over the years have subdivided these into a number of specific tenures such as secure tenancies, assured tenancies and assured shorthold tenancies.
