Private rented accommodation can often be the only housing option available, especially for single people without children. It includes self-contained flats or houses, or part of a flat or house shared with other people, sometimes the landlord. Shared accommodation includes bedsits which may be in houses in multiple occupation (HMOs). Finding decent, affordable accommodation in the private sector can be a real problem. Over recent decades, there has been a dramatic decline in the amount of private rented accommodation. The accommodation that is available in some areas is often of poor quality and in
disrepair or very expensive. Many landlords will not accept unemployed people and high
rent deposit and rent in advance also make it impossible for many people to afford to rent privately. This keyword lists resources about the issues related to renting accommodation privately, including rent deposit schemes.
