StreetLink is an England-wide phone-line, website and mobile app which enables the public to alert Local Authorities about people sleeping rough in their area.
Homeless Link dives into data
The datadive will provide an opportunity to explore some of the data that we hold in new and interesting ways.
What is a DataDive?
Datadives are high energy, marathon-style events where mission-driven organisations work alongside teams of volunteer data scientists, developers and designers, using data to gain insight into our communities, so we can ultimately improve the support we offer. This activity takes place in a short timeframe of 48 hours or less.
What will we be exploring?
Homeless Link is taking two projects to the datadive:
1. We’ll ask volunteer data scientists to explore our StreetLink data. StreetLink is a tool that members of the public can use to make referrals about people sleeping rough, and connect them with the outreach teams nearest to them.
We want to see if we can better understand where those referrals come from and whether data about external factors, such as the weather and social media activity, can predict how busy StreetLink will be. We hope that our findings mean that StreetLink can work even more efficiently to get referrals to the outreach teams who can offer support to rough sleepers.

2. We will also be taking our In-Form DataLab to the event. This brings together anonymised information from organisations using the In-Form case management system, including data on the profile of service users, the support they receive, and outcomes they achieve. It’s the first time that a dataset like this has been created in the homelessness sector and we’ll use the datadive to explore what we can learn from it.
We will be asking questions like: what is the profile of people who access homelessness services, and has this changed over time? What do different journeys of recovery look like? And what kinds of outcomes do people experience when they access homelessness services? We’re not sure yet what we’ll learn from this, but we’re excited to start the journey.
What happens next?
We hope that the datadive will create some insight that we can use to make the StreetLink system work even better, and to direct our next steps with the In-Form DataLab. We will be able to let you know in August how it all turns out!
